What is blue light?

High-energy visible (HEV) light, or blue light, is one of the colours in the visible light spectrum that can be viewed by humans. Nanometers (nm) are used to measure the distance between two points, and blue light has a wavelength of 380 nm to 500 nm; These days artificial blue light is unavoidable, its everywhere, led lights, phones, computers, tv, even you refrigerator probably has blue light!

Is Blue light bad?

Blue light biggest emitter is actually the sun, and it actually has many benefits for you when coming from the sun, boosts alertness, helps memory and brain function, and elevates mood. It regulates your body’s natural wake and sleep cycle (circadian rhythm). The problem with blue light comes from all the artificial blue light after the sun has gone down.

Blue light and melatonin

The pineal gland in the human brain secretes melatonin, also known as the “sleep hormone,” plays an important role in controlling sleep and wakefulness. As the sun sets, it starts to get dark and that sends the signal to your brain to start producing melatonin, which causes us to get drowsy and tired. However the issue is now is we are always exposed artificial blue light, which basically tricks your brain into thinking its daytime. When your eyes are exposed to artificial blue light it sends a signal to your brain that it is daytime, which in return the suppresses your melatonin, making it harder to fall asleep, stay asleep, and feel energized upon waking.

How about red, yellow, and clear lenses?

The most harmful wavelengths for sleeping are below 500 nm, which is why we don’t use red lenses since blue light has a wavelength range of 380 to 500 nm. If you wish to filter more than 500nm with 99.9% efficiency, the lens must be darker and redder. There won’t be much, if any, benefit to your sleep, and everything will be excessively red and your eyes will have to strain themselves to see anything, which increases your chance of developing eyestrain.
Contrary to what the majority of clear and yellow lenses claim, they do not filter 99.9% of light. Clear lens block 30% of blue light, where as yellow block about 60% of blue light.

How to wear

We recommend wearing our glasses 2 to 3 hours before sleeping and only taking them off when it is completely dark. If you get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom we recommend putting them back on. Do NOT wear driving.
